ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2006) –
Sophomore Rachel Cushman (Irondequoit, pictured) scored a pair of first-half goals for Nazareth Saturday as the host Golden Flyers defeated Hartwick in women's soccer, 3-0, at Golden Flyer Stadium.

The Golden Flyers won a key Empire 8 Conference game to improve to 2-2-1 in league play and 6-4-1 overall. The Hawks are 2-3 in conference games and 4-9 overall. The victory enabled Nazareth to move past Hartwick in the Empire 8 Conference standings. The top four teams qualify for next month's conference tournament.

Cushman's goals give her a team-best five for the season. Her first goal came at 8:28 of the first half when she one-timed a crossing pass from Julie Birbilis (Ballston Spa, NY). She scored again about 10 minutes later off an assist from senior Rosie Simiele (Syracuse, NY).

In the second half, Nazareth continued to control the action and got another goal in the 69th minute from Simiele, whose fourth goal of the season was assisted by sophomore Emily Zurschmit (Camden, NY).

Nazareth ended up with a 22-2 shooting advantage. Junior goalie Shannon Burns (Albany, NY) made one save to gain credit for the shutout. Hartwick's Ashley Taylor (Nashua, NH) made nine saves.
