ELMIRA,
N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2006) -- Host Elmira scored a stunning
upset in women's soccer Saturday as the Soaring
Eagles rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Nazareth,
2-1, in an Empire 8 Conference game.
Elmira's win was its first this
season in conference play and first over the Golden
Flyers in more than 11 years. Nazareth, now 2-3-1
in the Empire 8 and 6-5-3 overall, had won 12
straight meetings since Elmira's last victory
(Sept. 26, 1995). The Soaring Eagles are now 1-4-1
in the Empire 8 and 2-9-2 overall.
"It's very disappointing
especially considering the way we had played in
our last couple of games," said Nazareth
Coach Gail Mann. "We didn't deserve to win."
The Golden Flyers had tied William
Smith and Rochester respectively in their last
two games and took a 1-0 lead against Elmira on
an unassisted goal by Jessemyn Russell (pictured)
in the 14th minute. Elmira tied the score before
halftime on an unassisted score by Jessica Talbot.
In the second half, Elmira's Heather
Brown scored the game-winning goal with slightly
more than 30 minutes left in regulation. The Golden
Flyers dominated the play for the balance of the
game, but couldn't create enough quality chances
to tie the score.
The defeat puts the Golden Flyers
in jeopardy of not making next month's Empire
8 Conference Tournament. Currently in fifth place
in the E8, the Golden Flyers will need a victory
over Alfred Tuesday and an RIT win at home over
St. John Fisher Wednesday to move into fourth
place.
