N.Y. (Sept. 2, 2006) – Host Nazareth scored
twice in the first half and once in the second
Saturday to take a 3-0 women's soccer victory
over Allegheny in the season opener for both teams.
The game, played in a steady rain,
was played at Nazareth's Golden Flyer Stadium
as part of the Nazareth Tournament. The Golden
Flyers play Wittenberg Sunday at 11 a.m. and William
Smith meets Allegheny at 2 p.m. Wittenberg defeated
14th-ranked William Smith, 1-0, in Saturday's
second game.
Against Allegheny, Nazareth got
first-half goals from sophomores Rachel Cushman
(pictured) and Sandi Toth to take control. Cushman's
goal came after she received a pass on the right
wing from Jessica Rogers. Toth's goal came with
just :29 left in the half after a shot by freshman
Caitlin Welch. The ball slipped through the fingers
of Allegheny keeper Danielle Brigham and Toth
was there to push it into the loose ball into
the goal.
In the second half, senior Rosie
Simiele netted an unassisted goal as she fired
a high shot over the outstretched hands of Brigham.
Nazareth had a 13-5 advantage
in shots and junior goalie Shannon Burns played
the entire 90 minutes and made three saves.
In the second game, Wittenberg
got an unassisted goal from junior Lisa Rusch
with less than 20 minutes left in regulation to
break a scoreless tie. Wittenberg outshot William
Smith 12-3 and goalie Meghan O'Rourke made one
save to receive credit for the shutout. Senior
Nikki Dudley made five saves for the Herons, ranked
14th nationally by d3kicks.com.
