ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Sept. 2, 2006) – Host Nazareth scored twice in the first half and once in the second Saturday to take a 3-0 women's soccer victory over Allegheny in the season opener for both teams.

The game, played in a steady rain, was played at Nazareth's Golden Flyer Stadium as part of the Nazareth Tournament. The Golden Flyers play Wittenberg Sunday at 11 a.m. and William Smith meets Allegheny at 2 p.m. Wittenberg defeated 14th-ranked William Smith, 1-0, in Saturday's second game.

Against Allegheny, Nazareth got first-half goals from sophomores Rachel Cushman (pictured) and Sandi Toth to take control. Cushman's goal came after she received a pass on the right wing from Jessica Rogers. Toth's goal came with just :29 left in the half after a shot by freshman Caitlin Welch. The ball slipped through the fingers of Allegheny keeper Danielle Brigham and Toth was there to push it into the loose ball into the goal.

In the second half, senior Rosie Simiele netted an unassisted goal as she fired a high shot over the outstretched hands of Brigham.

Nazareth had a 13-5 advantage in shots and junior goalie Shannon Burns played the entire 90 minutes and made three saves.

In the second game, Wittenberg got an unassisted goal from junior Lisa Rusch with less than 20 minutes left in regulation to break a scoreless tie. Wittenberg outshot William Smith 12-3 and goalie Meghan O'Rourke made one save to receive credit for the shutout. Senior Nikki Dudley made five saves for the Herons, ranked 14th nationally by d3kicks.com.
