ROCHESTER,
N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2006) – Host Nazareth scored
a pair of second-half goals Tuesday to break open
a scoreless tie and the Golden Flyers went on
to defeat Hamilton in men's soccer, 2-1, at Golden
Flyer Stadium.
Nazareth improved to 5-0 with the non-conference
win. Hamilton lost for the first time and now
stands at 1-1-1 overall. The Golden Flyers open
their Empire 8 Conference schedule Saturday at
home against Ithaca at 3:30 p.m.
"It was a great win against a great team,"
said Nazareth Coach Danny Gilbertson after his
team defeated Hamilton for the first time since
2000. "They play in a strong conference,
so anytime you can beat them it's a positive thing."
After a scoreless first half, Nazareth scored
twice in a span of 2:10 in the second half to
take control. Senior midfielder Scott Rigney (pictured,
Keshequa HS/Nunda, NY) scored an unassisted goal
in the 67th minute to put Nazareth ahead and sophomore
Justin Stevens (Canisius HS/Derby, NY) scored
unassisted in the 69th minute.
Hamilton narrowed the gap four minutes later
on an unassisted score by Joseph Hudson (Madison,
WI), but the Continentals were unable to get the
tying goal as Nazareth goalie Alex Kilroy (Spencerport
HS/Spencerport, NY) made a season-high 10 saves.
Hamilton led in shots (16-7) and corner kicks
(8-2). Hamilton goalie Anthony Carello (East Syracuse,
NY) made four saves.
