Danny Gilbertson, for four seasons an assistant coach at Hobart
College, became Nazareth's head men's soccer coach in 2004, succeeding
the legendary Doug May, who died suddenly in April of '04.
In 2005, Gilbertson helped the Golden Flyers achieve something no
other Nazareth's men's soccer team has accomplished before -- a
berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Although the overall record was 6-10-5, Nazareth was able to string
together a pair of quality defensive efforts in the Empire 8 Conference
Tournament and advanced past both Ithaca and RIT via penalty kicks
to gain the conference co-championship and its first-ever national
tournament berth.
"The players discovered a tremendous amount of
belief during the conference tournament," Gilbertson said of
the Golden Flyers' late-season magic. "Their defensive resilience
was good enough to earn them a place in the history of this program."
A
native of London, Gilbertson teamed with Hobart head coach Shawn
Griffin to transform the Statesmen men's soccer program into one
of the best in the region. Hobart finished 6-11-2 in Gilbertson's
first season there in 2000, then 14-7-1 in 2003. Griffin and Gilbertson
were chosen as Coaching Staff of the Year in the Upstate Collegiate
Athletic Association for 2003.
As a player, Gilbertson was a four-year starter and three-year captain
while playing at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. He
led the Panthers to three NCAA Tournament apprearances and an undefeated
regular season in 1998. He earned regional All-American honors in
'98 and was a three-time Little East all-conference selection.
After graduating with a degree in physical education, Gilbertson
played one season for the Vermont Voltage of the USL's Premier Development
League.
Gilbertson played for Griffin at Plymouth State and served as an
assistant coach there in 1999. He then followed Griffin to Hobart
in 2000.
Gilbertson's coaching qualifications include certification from
the United European Football Association, and English Football Association
preliminary license and a national advanced coaching diploma from
the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Gilbertson is just the third head soccer coach in Nazareth's history.
He and his wife Emily reside in Geneva. They are parents to a son,
Andre, who was born in 2005.
