GOLDEN FLYERS WIN AGAIN, 3-1
Nazareth defeats Washington & Jefferson to open 2-0
BOXSCORE | • CUMULATIVE STATS

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Sept. 2, 2006) – Nazareth's men's soccer team recorded its second victory in as many days Saturday as the Golden Flyers prevailed 3-1 over Washington & Jefferson in the second day of the Doug May Classic, hosted by RIT.

"These are two huge results for us that gets the momentum going in the right direction," said Nazareth Coach Danny Gilbertson. "I'm not surprised that we're 2-0, but I'm delighted."

Nazareth opened its season Friday with a 2-1 overtime win over Geneseo. Saturday's game was played in a driving rainstorm which hindered the quality of play.

"There was a lot of adversity especially with the weather," Gilbertson said. "I think we just dug a little deeper than they did."

Senior Ed Babcock (pictured) scored for Nazareth on a penalty kick in the 27th minute after a foul in the penalty area. Washington & Jefferson tied the score three minutes before halftime when Ryan McDonald judged the wind correctly and scored directly off a corner kick.

In the second half, Nazareth scored twice in a two-minute span to pull away for the win. Junior Paul Pacitto scored first following a scramble in the penalty area. Scott Cavanaugh picked up the assist at 76:35. Sophomore Justin Stevens added an insurance goal at 78:31 as he scored following a corner kick by Andrew Wirfel.

The victory gives Nazareth its first 2-0 start since the 2000 season. The Golden Flyers return to action Wednesday with a non-conference home game against Buffalo State at 4 p.m.
