ROCHESTER,
N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2006) – Freshman Philip Holmberg
(pictured) scored off a direct kick with less
than two minutes to play in the first overtime
period Friday to lift Nazareth to a 2-1 men's
soccer victory over Geneseo in the season opening
game for both teams.
The victory came in the annual Doug May Classic
hosted by RIT. It marked Nazareth's first win
in a season-opening game since the 2000 season
when the Golden Flyers defeated Buffalo State,
5-0. The Golden Flyers play again Saturday at
RIT against Washington & Jefferson at 3 p.m.
"It's a good win against a good team,"
said Nazareth Coach Danny Gilbertson. "They
had some better scoring chances, but I thought
we possessed the ball better. It's a nice way
to start the season."
After a Geneseo foul outside the penalty area,
Holmberg, a Swedish exchange student playing in
his first game, drilled the ensuing direct kick
into the upper right corner of the goal to end
the game with 1:43 left in the first 10-minute
overtime.
Senior midfielder Scott Rigney gave Nazareth
a 1-0 advantage in the first half as he scored
on a header off a corner kick from the foot of
Andrew Wirfel. Geneseo tied the score early in
the second half on an unassistesd goal by Judah
Manetta.
Geneseo had a 16-8 edge in shots and Nazareth
goalie Alex Kilroy made nine saves.
