LAURINBURG,
N.C. (March 11, 2007) -- Senior Tia Morgia (pictured)
scored five goals Sunday, including the game-winning
goal with 3:00 to play in the second half as Nazareth
won its season-opening game in women's lacrosse
with a hard-fought 11-9 victory over Division
II St. Andrews College.
"It was a scary game, a typical first game,"
said Nazareth Coach Sue Behme. "We didn't
play particularly well, but our seniors stepped
up and we found a way."
Seniors accounted for all 11 of Nazareth's goals.
Colleen Earley had a career-best three goals,
Beth Quartier scored twice and Jessica McArdle
also had a goal.
The game was tied 5-5 at halftime, then St. Andrews
twice had two-goal leads in the second half before
Nazareth rallied. The Golden Flyers scored the
last four goals of the game to erase the deficit.
Morgia scored four of her five goals in the second
half, including the tying goal on an 8-meter shot
with 13:08 to play and the game-winner about 10
minutes later. Earley added an insurance goal
with 43 seconds left.
Sophomore Maria Fusco played all 60 minutes in
goal and made six saves.
Nazareth plays again Friday at St. Lawrence at
4 p.m.
