and Allison Bayer each scored two goals in overtime
for Nazareth Friday as the visiting Golden Flyers
defeated St. John Fisher in women's lacrosse,
10-7.
The victory extended Nazareth's Empire 8 Conference
win streak to 19 games and left the Golden Flyers
with an opportunity to clinch the regular-season
conference title with a victory at Alfred Saturday.
Nazareth is 9-1 overall and 6-0 in conference
games. Fisher is 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the Empire
8.
The game was tied, 6-6, after 60 minutes of
regulation, setting up the two three-minute overtime
periods. Fisher's Ramona Walters scored with
1:12 left in the first overtime to give the Cardinals
the 7-6 advantage, but Nazareth countered with
goals from Morgia and Bayer in the final 13.8
seconds of the first overtime to regain the lead
for good, 8-7. Morgia's goal was unassisted with
13.8 seconds left, then Bayer scored off an assist
from Caity Richardson just 10 seconds later.
Nazareth maintained its one-goal lead until
Bayer scored again with 32 seconds left in the
second overtime off an assist from Morgia. Nazareth
struck again just 17 seconds later as Morgia
notched her third goal of the game and her team-best
23rd goal of the season with freshman Nora Davis
assisting.
Nazareth and St. John Fisher traded goals in
the first half. Fisher scored the first goal with
just under 20 minutes to play in the first half
to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Beth Quartier answered
for the Golden Flyers to tie the game with 12:15
remaining in the half. The Cardinals grabbed a
2-1 advantage three minutes later. Senior Caitlin
Zimmer tied the game for Nazareth with 2:40 left
in the first half on an unassisted goal. Ashley
Fenyn gave Fisher a 3-2 lead going into halftime
after scoring on a free position shot with 1:32
left in the half.
The Cardinals extended their lead to 4-2 early
in the second half as Fenyn fed Haley Koperski
for a goal. Zimmer cut the Golden Flyers’
deficit to one goal midway through the second
half on an unassisted goal. Morgia tied the game
4-4 with 12:55 to play as she scored on a free
position shot. Zimmer gave Nazareth its first
lead of the game 16 seconds later as she connected
on her free position opportunity. Koperski scored
her second goal of the game to tie the game 5-5
with 6:12 left in the second half. Freshman Nora
Davis gave the Golden Flyers a temporary 6-5 lead
with 4:42 remaining in the game, but the Cardinals
scored just 10 seconds later to tie the game 6-6.
Sophomore
Maria Fusco made 10 saves for Nazareth to get
credit for the victory.
The Cardinals held a slight advantage in shots
(25-21), ground balls (22-20), and draw controls
(11-10) but committed four more turnovers than
the Golden Flyers (21-17).
Nazareth completes its conference schedule Saturday,
April 21 at Alfred. The Golden Flyers return home
for a non-conference game against William Smith
(April 25th) and the University of Rochester (April
28th).
