N.Y. (April 25, 2007) -- Senior Jessica McArdle
(pictured, Lancaster HS/Depew, NY) and junior
Allison Bayer (Corning East HS/Corning, NY) each
scored three goals for Nazareth to lead the Golden
Flyers over the University of Rochester 12-6.
The non-conference win was the tenth straight
for the Golden Flyers, who finish the regular
season with a 12-1 record. Nazareth has won 28
out of its last 29 regular season games dating
back to the 2005 season. With the loss, the Yellowjackets
fall to 4-9.
The Golden Flyers took control early as McArdle
scored less than three minutes into the game.
Senior Tia Morgia (Watertown HS/Watertown, NY)
gave Nazareth a 2-0 advantage after scoring an
unassisted goal with 22:45 left in the first half.
Bayer increased the Golden Flyers' lead to 3-0
with her first goal coming with 18:41 left in
the half. She added her second goal 16 seconds
later to make it a four-goal Nazareth lead.
Rochester converted on a free position shot half
way through the period to cut its deficit to 4-1.
However, Nazareth answered with three goals before
the half ended to take a 7-1 lead at halftime.
Seniors Beth Quartier (Cicero-North Syracuse HS/Cicero,
NY), Caitlin Zimmer (East Rochester HS/East Rochester,
NY), and McArdle each recorded a goal for Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers extended their lead to 9-1
early in the second half as Morgia scored her
second goal and McArdle recorded her third. Rochester
scored five of the final eight goals of the game
but never threatened Nazareth's lead. Bayer, Liz
Wells (Ithaca HS/Ithaca, NY), and Alyssia Roberts
(Marcus Whitman HS/Stanley, NY) recorded Nazareth's
final goals of the game.
The Golden Flyers held a small advantage in draw
controls (11-8), but were slightly outshot (23-21).
Each team collected 19 ground balls while Nazareth
was called for 22 fouls compared to seven for
Rochester. Sophomore Maria Fusco (Immaculate Heart
Central/Watertown, NY) made eight saves in 54
minutes of playing time to record her 12th victory
of the season.
Nazareth will host the Empire 8 Conference tournament
May 5 and 6. The Golden Flyers are the top seed
and will play against RIT at 1:30 on May 5th.
The winner of the Nazareth/RIT game will play
the winner of Ithaca/St. John Fisher for the championship
on May 6th at 1 p.m.
