N.Y. (March 28, 2007) -- Senior attackman Jordan
Hirsch (Hendrick Hudson HS/ Montrose, NY) scored
a game-high four goals while fellow senior Chad
Amidon (Onondaga HS/Syracuse, NY) scored three
goals and junior Brian Lissner (pictured, East
Syracuse-Minoa HS/East Syracuse, NY) added three
goals and one assist to help lead the Golden Flyers
to a 21-4 conference victory over visiting Elmira.
The Golden Flyers, ranked 11th nationally in Division
III, improved to 7-1 and 1-0 in the Empire 8 while
Elmira fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Amidon scored the first goal just 1:25 into the
game. Brad Levick tied the game 1-1 for the Soaring
Eagles :35 seconds later. Nazareth answered with
four consecutive goals as senior Ryan Hotaling
(Onondaga HS/Syracuse, NY) scored with 7:47 and
Hirsch added three consecutive goals in under
a minute to build the Golden Flyers' lead to 5-1.
Mike Szpiech scored for Elmira with :29 seconds
left in the first quarter to cut Nazareth's lead
to 5-2.
Nazareth scored four goals in the second quarter
to take a 9-2 halftime lead. The Golden Flyers'
goal scorers were Amidon, Hotaling, and Mark Kanellis
(Cortland HS/Cortland, NY). Hirsch scored his
fourth goal of the game with :20 to play in the
half.
The Golden Flyers continued their scoring run
in the third quarter as they exploded for four
goals in the first 3:01 of the second half. Lissner
started the scoring run followed by a goal by
Jim Wall (Corcoran HS/Syracuse, NY), Steve Cutia
(Cortland HS/Cortland, NY), and Lissner's second
goal of the game to give Nazareth a 13-2 advantage.
Wall, Amidon, and Kevin Gibbons (Bishop Brady/Canterbury,
NH) each added goals in the final eight minutes
of the quarter to give the Golden Flyers a commanding
16-3 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Szpiech scored a man-up goal for the Soaring
Eagles to cut their deficit to 16-4, but the Golden
Flyers scored the final five goals of the game.
Mike Cummings (Elmira Notre Dame HS/Elmira, NY),
Aaron Civilier (Penfield HS/Rochester, NY), and
Lissner each tallied one goal during the final
scoring run while Mark DeCirce (Binghamton HS/Binghamton,
NY) added two goals to extend Nazareth's lead
to 21-4.
Goalie Pat Mullin (Irondequoit HS/Rochester,
NY) only faced two shots in about nine minutes
of playing time to record the victory for Nazareth.
Chris Hoffmeister (Holderness School/Norfolk,
MA), Cory Spinale (Governor Academy/Wakefield,
MA), Todd Dermody (Newfield HS/Selden, NY), and
Anthony Desimone (Immaculate Heart Central/Clayton,
NY) split the final 51 minutes of playing time
in goal for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth had an advantage in shots (56-17), face-offs
(20-9), ground balls (48-24) and were successful
on 26 of 30 clear attempts..
Nazareth is home again Wednesday for another Empire
8 Conference game. The Golden Flyers host Utica
at 4 p.m.
