TROY,
N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2006) -- Junior Kelly Miranda
(Ossining, NY/Ossining) tallied two goals, including
the game-winner in overtime to lead Nazareth
to a 3-2 victory Sunday over Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute (RPI) in non-conference field hockey
action. With the victory, the Golden Flyers finish
their season 5-12 overall. The Red Hawks conclude
their regular season with a 9-9 mark.
Miranda (pictured), who scored the first goal
for Nazareth, sealed the victory in overtime
after
putting
her own rebound past Rensselaer goalie Jen O’Neil
(Derry, NH/Pinkerton Academy) at the 73:19 mark.
After a scoreless first half, Rensselaer jumped
out to a 1-0 lead at 47:24 off a goal by freshman
Shaina Feldman (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville
Area). Sophomore Kerri Clark (Saratoga Springs,
NY/Saratoga Springs), who earned the assist on
the goal, sent a hard shot in from well outside
the circle to Feldman who tipped it in beyond
the reach of Golden Flyers goalie Katie May (Rochester,
NY/Irondequoit) for the tally.
Nazareth quickly stormed back into the match
when Miranda chipped in a shot from the right
side of the net at 54:26. Freshman Kelly Flanagan
(Fairport, NY/Fairport) would make it a 2-1 advantage
for the Golden Flyers with just under four minutes
remaining in the match.
Clark would even things up for Rensselaer and
force the overtime session after converting a
pass from freshman Megan McNamara (Johnstown,
NY/Johnstown), beating May on the left side at
68:10.
May finished with 14 saves in the win for Nazareth.
Senior Liz Szewczak (Enfield, CT/Enrico Fermi),
who played the first half of the game, finished
with five saves, while O’Neil had one stop
in the loss for the Red Hawks.
