NY. (Jan. 26, 2007) -- Nazareth led visiting Hartwick
through most of the game on its way to a 67-63
victory in an Empire 8 Conference basketball game.
The victory improves the Golden Flyers' record
to 6-11 overall and 2-4 in the Empire 8 while
the loss drops Hartwick to 4-10 overall and 2-4
in the conference.
After Hartwick scored the first four points of
the game, Nazareth took control and built its
lead to 11 points at halftime. Hartwick began
the second half strong by cutting Nazareth's lead
to 40-35 with 13:23 to play on a lay-up by Mara
Tichy.
After freshman Kelly Dunne connected on a three-pointer
to give the Golden Flyers an eight-point lead
with 8:17 remaining in the game, the Hawks went
on a 10-2 scoring run to tie the game at 49 with
5:44 to play. Nazareth answered quickly with a
9-0 scoring run after Dunne and freshman Whitney
Smith connected with jumpers and senior Stephanie
Bowens added a lay-up. The scoring run was capped-off
by a three-pointer by senior Sarah Homer to give
the Golden Flyers a commanding 58-49 lead with
just 2:19 remaining in the game. Nazareth secured
the victory by making nine of 10 free throws in
the final 55 seconds. The Golden Flyers were 15-17
from the free throw line for the game.
The Golden Flyers had four players in double
figures as they beat Hartwick with a balanced
scoring attack. Smith scored a team-high 15 points
while Dunne added 14 points and freshman Rachel
Pirozzolo (pictured) recorded a career-high 10
points. Sophomore Sally Wilcox added 11 points.
Hartwick was led by seniors Lindsay Wilson and
Mara Tichy who scored 22 points and 20 points
respectively. The Hawks stayed close in the game
the game thanks to an enormous advantage in rebounds
(47-24) and turnovers (24-13).
The Golden Flyers are home again tomorrow for
another Empire 8 Conference game. They will host
Utica at 2 p.m.
