Fla. (Dec. 28, 2006) -- Nazareth's women's basketball
team dropped its first of two games to be played
this week at the Land of Magic Classic. The Golden
Flyers lost Thursday to Gwynedd-Mercy of Fort
Washington, Pa., 70-60, in a non-conference game.
Nazareth plays again Friday against Neumann College
of Pennsylvania at 12 p.m.
In Thursday's game, Nazareth fell behind 20-5
in the first five minutes and never recovered.
Gwynedd-Mercy's Kristy Cramp made three of her
nine three-pointers to give the Griffins an advantage
early.
Nazareth's Whitney Smith (pictured) scored 11
of her team-high 15 points in the first half as
Nazareth came back to within five, 24-19, on a
pair of Smith free throws with 8:25 left.
The Griffins led 38-27 at halftime and Nazareth
came back to within nine points, 58-49, on a three-pointer
by Sarah Homer with 5:07 left.
In the end, the Golden Flyers had no answer for
Cramp, who scored a game-high 27 points by making
9 of 11 three-point shots. Smith had nine rebounds
for Nazareth to go with her 15 points. Homer and
junior Ali Sharpe each scored eight points and
senior Stephanie Bowens also had nine rebounds.
Nazareth is 2-5 overall. Gwynedd-Mercy is 7-1
overall.
