N.Y. (Feb. 2, 2007) – Host St. John Fisher,
benefiting from a whopping 51-27 rebounding advantage,
broke open a close game Friday by outscoring Nazareth
35-27 in the second half to take a 67-56 victory
in Empire 8 women’s basketball action at
Fisher’s Manning-Napier Gym.
The victory was Fisher’s second of the
season over the Golden Flyers, who lost at home
to the Cardinals, 69-61, Jan. 6. The Cardinals
improved their overall record to 11-8 and their
Empire 8 Conference mark to 5-3. Nazareth is 2-6
in the Empire 8 and 6-13 overall.
Fisher led for most of the first half before
settling for a 32-27 lead at the break. The Cardinals
had 31-9 rebounding advantage in the first 20
minutes with 16 offensive boards. Stephanie Bowens
(pictured) had 11 points in the first half for
the Golden Flyers and Sarah Homer and Whitney
Smith each scored five. Allison Boehm scored 11
points for the Cardinals.
Nazareth came back to tie the score at 35 early
in the second half following a basket by freshman
Rachel Pirozzolo and a pair of free throws by
Kelly Dunne. Fisher answered with a pair of free
throws from Ashley Dean and a basket by Mary Kate
Comfort to regain the lead for good, 39-35.
Boehm recorded game highs in points (22) and
rebounds (9). Meagan Tubbs added 11 points and
Dean had 10. Bowens was Nazareth’s high
scorer with 17 points. Smith finished with 12
points and six rebounds.
The Golden Flyers return to action Saturday for
another E8 Conference game at Alfred at 2 p.m.
Nazareth also visits RIT Tuesday at 6 p.m.
