ELMIRA HOLDS OFF NAZARETH, 67-62
Golden Flyers (5-10) host RIT Tuesday

ELMIRA, NY. (Jan. 20, 2007) -- Elmira held off visiting Nazareth 67-62 in an Empire 8 Conference game Saturday afternoon. The victory improves Elmira's record to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in the Conference while the Golden Flyers see their record fall to 5-10 overall and 1-3 in the Empire 8.

After Danielle Troutman three-pointer gave Elmira an early 3-0 lead, Nazareth's offense caught fire. Senior Sarah Homer scored the Golden Flyers' first points of the game at 17:05 with a two-point jumper to make the score 3-2. The Golden Flyers then went on a 21-7 run over the next 11 minutes to take a 23-10 lead with just less than six minutes remaining in the first half as freshman Jamie Malloy hit two free-throws.

The final five minutes of the first half belonged to the Soaring Eagles as they scored 14 out of the next 16 points. Britta Anderson's two free-throws with four seconds left cut Nazareth's lead to 25-24 at halftime.

Elmira's offense continued to roll through the first 7:08 of the second half as the Soaring Eagles opened with a 19-5 run after Marcia Coakley converted a three-point play with 12:52 to play. The Golden Flyers quickly responded as they outscored Elmira 15-2 in the next 2:45 to tie the game at 45 on a two-point jumper by freshman Whitney Smith with 10:07 to play.

The next seven minutes featured three ties and six lead changes before the Soaring Eagles took the lead for good on another converted three-point play by Marcia Coakley with 2:47 left to play to give the Eagles a 60-58 lead and eventually the 67-62 victory.

Nazareth was led by junior Ali Sharpe (pictured) who scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. Senior Stephanie Bowens added 10 points and six rebounds for the Golden Flyers. Three players scored in double digits for Elmira as Marcia Coakley scored a team-high 18 points, Bridget Catanese recorded 12 points, and Kourtney Troutman added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Nazareth plays its next game at home Tuesday night at 6 p.m. against RIT.
