N.Y. (Nov. 25, 2006) -- Freshman Whitney Smith
(pictured) led a five-player contingent in double
figures Saturday with 16 points as Nazareth won
its season opener in women's basketball with an
81-61 non-conference victory over visiting Clarkson.
Nazareth plays again at home Sunday at 2 p.m.
vs. Hilbert. Clarkson, now 0-3, visits RIT.
Smith (Webster Thomas) made 7 of 17 shots from
the field, including two three-pointers and gathered
eight rebounds to lead the way. The Golden Flyers
also got 14 points each from freshmen Kelly Dunne
(Northport, NY) and Jamie Malloy (Penfield), 13
points from senior Sarah Homer (Delmar, NY) and
10 from senior Stephanie Bowens (Nazareth Academy).
The Golden Flyers secured a comfortable halftime
lead, 38-26, as Malloy (Penfield) scored 12 of
her points and Smith contributed nine of her points.
Nazareth's lead never left double digit in the
second half and grew as large as 21 points on
a basket by Smith with 16:20 left.
Nazareth played well defensively, forcing 25
Clarkson turnovers and getting 14 steals. Homer,
who made three three-point baskets also had eight
rebounds and four steals. Dunne, who made two
three-pointers, also passed for six assists.
Rachel Whitermore was Clarkson's high scorer
with 13 points. Michelle Reddinger had 10 points
and 18 rebounds.
