N.Y. (Feb. 3, 2007) – Visiting Nazareth
used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Alfred
80-73 in an Empire 8 Conference basketball game.
Five players scored in double figures for the
Golden Flyers, who improve to 7-13 overall and
3-6 in the Empire 8. With the loss, Alfred falls
to 4-16 overall and is 0-9 in the Empire 8.
Alfred surged to a 17-8 lead just over eight
minutes into the game, but the Golden Flyers went
on a 14-4 scoring run to cut the Saxons' lead
to 22-21 with 5:15 to play in the first half.
Nazareth put together another scoring run capped
off by a jumper by freshman Whitney Smith to take
a 37-35 halftime lead.
The Golden Flyers controlled the opening minutes
of the second half expanding their lead to 48-38
after freshman Kelly Dunne (pictured) connected
on a two-point jumper. Alfred chopped away at
Nazareth's lead as the Saxons went on a 19-9 scoring
run and took their first lead of the second half,
58-57 with 10:44 to play. Nazareth secured the
victory after Smith, junior Ali Sharpe, and sophomore
Sally Wilcox combined to go eight for eight from
the free throw line in the final 1:37.
Dunne led the Golden Flyers with 18 points, Smith
added 13 points off the bench, followed by senior
Sarah Homer who recorded 12 points. Sharpe and
freshman Jamie Malloy each added 10 points for
Nazareth.
Alfred was led by Megan Samsell (25 points),
Melanie Jackson (13 points), Libby Meier (12 points),
and Hannah Meier (11 points). The Saxons held
a slight advantage in rebounds (37-32) but had
25 turnovers.
The Golden Flyers travel to RIT for another Empire
8 Conference game on Tuesday, February 6 at 6
p.m.
