SMITH LEADS NAZARETH PAST ALFRED, 66-54
Golden Flyers improve to 4-5 overall

ROCHESTER, NY. (Jan. 5, 2007) -- Freshman Whitney Smith scored a game-high 17 points to lead host Nazareth over Alfred in an Empire 8 conference women's basketball game. The victory improved the Golden Flyers' record to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play and dropped Alfred's record to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in the Empire 8.

Alfred led through most of the game and at halftime 28-26 thanks to clutch shooting by freshman Lisa Button and senior Megan Sampsell.

Nazareth overcame 22 turnovers, most in the first half, to outscore the Saxons 40-26 in the second half.

Down by five, 49-44 with six minutes left, Nazareth outscored Alfred 22-5 the rest of the way. A free throw by Ali Sharpe with 4:12 left put Nazareth ahead to stay, 51-50. Smith also hit a clutch three-pointer and made five free throws in the decisive scoring run. Smith went 9 for 11 from the foul line and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Sharpe finished with 12 points and five rebounds and freshman Jamie Malloy pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds.

Melanie Jackson and Lisa Button each scored 12 points for Alfred.

The Golden Flyers host St. John Fisher Saturday at 2 p.m. in another Empire 8 Conference matchup. The game is on two local radio stations: WHTK-AM 1280 and WYSL-AM 1040.
