ELMIRA SURPRISES NAZARETH 76-64

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Jan. 21, 2005) – The Elmira College Soaring Eagles took Nazareth by surprise in women's basketball Friday by taking a 76-64 victory over the Golden Flyers in an Empire 8 Conference game.

Elmira built a 35-27 halftime thanks to 22 Nazareth turnovers. The Golden Flyers finished with 36 turnovers overall. Elmira improved to 1-3 in conference play and 6-7 overall. Nazareth is 1-2 and 8-5.

The Soaring Eagles extended their lead by as many as 21 points, 50-29, early in the second half before Nazareth rallied. The Golden Flyers closed to a five-point 62-57 with 4:58 left in the second half. The Flyers were able to bridge the gap thanks to sophomore Michelle LeBrecque's three three-point field golals.

LeBrecque (pictured) finished with a career-high 11 points. Shipley amassed 20 points, 13 rebounds, and two assists, while Kate Gagliardi had 10 points.

Despite the Flyers' efforts, Elmira stayed ahead as four players reached double figures in points. Erin Eaton and Kourtney Troutman each scored 17. Rachel Bliss added 12 and Bridget Catanese had 11.

The Flyers continue the home portion of their Empire 8 Conference schedule as they host Ithaca Saturday at 2 p.m., as well as the RIT Tigers Tuesday at 6 p.m.
