NAZARETH KNOCKS OFF CORTLAND IN OPENER
Golden Flyers (1-0) win 71-65, play again Friday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Dec. 1, 2004) -- Host Nazareth jumped out to a 20-3 lead in the first eight minutes Wednesday, then withstood a second-half rally by Cortland to defeat the Red Dragons in women's basketball, 71-65.

The non-conference game was the season opener for the Golden Flyers. Cortland is 3-2 overall.

Senior Sara Shipley led Nazareth with a game-high 26 points, while sophomore guard Sarah Homer added a career-high 17 points to go with eight rebounds. Junior guard Kaylin VanDusen scored 15 points for Cortland.

Nazareth forced 16 first-half turnovers and Shipley scored 12 of her points as the Golden Flyers led by 17 points with 12:18 to go before settling for a 34-28 halftime lead.

Cortland rallied to take a brief lead, 50-48, with 7:13 to go on a basket by VanDusen. Nazareth, however, showed resilience by scoring the next nine points to take the lead for good, 57-50. Shipley had two field goals and a pair of free throws in that run.

In addition to the scoring of Shipley and Homer, senior guard Jaimee McGivern scored 13 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds. She also had five assists and five steals.

Junior Dani Maye and senior Deirdre Zimmerman each scored 14 points for Cortland.
