N.Y. (Feb. 10, 2007) -- Visiting Nazareth used
a balanced scoring attack to defeat Hartwick 81-73
in an Empire 8 conference game. The victory improves
the Golden Flyers' record to 9-14 overall and
4-8 in the Empire 8. With the loss, Hartwick drops
to 3-9 in the Empire 8 and 10-13 overall.
The Golden Flyers trailed by as many as six points
early in the first half but used a 22-6 scoring
run to take a 15-point lead with 2:56 remaining
in the half. Hartwick was able to connect on on
consecutive baskets to cut Nazareth's lead to
41-30 at halftime.
The Golden Flyers controlled most of the play
in the second half as they never surrendered the
lead. The Hawks, however, were able to cut Nazareth's
advantage to 61-59 with 7:23 to play in the game.
The Golden Flyers responded with an 11-2 scoring
run to take a 72-61 lead capped off by a layup
by senior Brian Steves. Nazareth matched Hartwick's
baskets in the final four minutes to thwart any
comeback attempt.
Junior Joe Canori (pictured) was one of four
Golden Flyers to score in double-digits as he
scored a game-high 25 points. Sophomore Jeff DeHimer
added 14 points, while freshman Corey McAdam recorded
13 points and 12 assists. Junior Tyler Smith was
Nazareth's fourth player in double figures with
11 points and six rebounds.
Hartwick also had four players scoring in double-digits.
Jan Cocozziello scored a team-high 23 points followed
by Ramond Doyley with 13 points, and Luigi Lanzi
and Cory Carson who each added 11 points. Hartwick
held a slight rebound advantage (33-26) but turned
the ball over five more times than the Golden
Flyers (16-11).
Nazareth hosts Elmira in another Empire 8 conference
game Friday, February 16 at 8 p.m.
