GOLDEN FLYERS FALL IN DOUBLE OVERTIME, 82-77

ALFRED, N.Y. (Feb. 3, 2007) -- Visiting Nazareth fell in double overtime to the Alfred Saxons, 82-77. The game featured 13 ties before the Saxons outscored Nazareth nine to four in the second overtime. Alfred scored all nine of its second overtime points on three-pointers as they connected three times from beyond the arc.

The victory improved Alfred's record to 7-12 overall and 5-4 in the Empire 8 Conference. With the loss, the Golden Flyers dropped to 3-6 in the Empire 8 and 8-12 overall.

The Golden Flyers built a 20-11 lead with 9:57 to play in the first half after freshman Corey McAdam connected on a three-point play. Alfred quickly scored nine unanswered points to tie the game at 20 with 7:06 remaining. Nazareth held a 33-30 advantage at halftime after junior Tyler Smith scored on a layup.

The Golden Flyers held a 50-40 lead, which was the largest of the game, with 12:18 to play in the second half after freshman Corey McAdam connected on two free throws. The Saxons then went on a 13-3 scoring run to tie the game at 53 with 7:30 left to play. The final 5:10 of regulation featured five ties as both teams answered one another's baskets down the stretch. Freshman Rayvon Higdon (pictured) made a layup for Nazareth with :21 to tie the score at 64 and send the game into the first overtime.

Higdon was strong through the first overtime as he scored all nine of Nazareth's points on four layups and a free throw. The Golden Flyers held a 73-69 lead with 1:55 remaining but Alfred's Dillon Stein scored the final four points of the overtime including a layup with :28 to play to tie the score at 73 and send the game into a second overtime.

Higdon again carried Nazareth on his back to open the second overtime as he spotted the Golden Flyers a 75-73 lead with 2:56 to play. Robby McCarter answered back for Alfred as he hit two consecutive three-pointers to put the Saxons ahead 79-75 lead with 1:17 left in the second overtime. The Saxons sealed the victory after Garlen Patt connected on another three-pointer to give Alfred an 82-77 lead with :24 left.

The Golden Flyers and Saxons each had four players scoring in double digits. Junior Joe Canori led Nazareth with 20 points despite shooting just 31% (8-26) from the field. Higdon scored 17 points for Nazareth and recorded all 13 of Nazareth's points during the two overtimes. Freshman Corey McAdam finished the game with 16 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Junior Tyler Smith finished the game with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Alfred was led by Dillon Stein who recored 20 points and Pat Smithgall who added 15 points and 18 rebounds. Robby McCarter and Jared Patt scored 16 and 12 points respectively. The Saxons held a 53-44 advantage in rebounds but turned the ball over 21 times to help keep Nazareth in the game.

The Golden Flyers travel to RIT to play another Empire 8 Conference game Tuesday, February 6 at 8 p.m.
