TOBY
BROWN
Associate Head Coach
Well recognized in the area college basketball scene for nearly
two decades, Toby Brown is in his 10th season with the Golden Flyers
and his sixth as the team's associate head coach.
He came to Nazareth in 1997 after seven auspicious
seasons as an assistant under Bob McVean at Rochester Institute
of Technology.
A native of Waterloo, Brown helped R.I.T. to four 20-win seasons
and three NCAA tournament appearances. In 1996-97, the Tigers finished
24-4 and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
During Brown's time at Nazareth, the Golden Flyers
have made four post-season appearances and won one conference title.
He helped the Golden Flyers to a 22-6 record in '02-03, which included
the championship of the JPMorgan Scholarship Tournament and an appearance
in the championship game of the ECAC Upstate Tournament.
Brown was a standout player at Waterloo High, then played for two
seasons at Alfred State before graduating with a degree in physical
education from Cortland. He currently teaches health and physical
education at the Norman Howard School in Rochester.
DICK
O'TOOLE
Assistant Coach
After 33 years of teaching and coaching in the Rochester City School
District, Dick O'Toole joined the Nazareth staff as a part-time
assistant coach in 2003.
O'Toole retired from high school coaching at the end of the 2002-03
season after compiling a career basketball record of 315-268 as
varsity coach at Edison Tech. Included in that run were three City-Catholic
League titles, two Section Five titles, and a trip to the New York
state Class A Final Four in 1999. He was named Section Five Class
A Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1998.
In addition to coaching basketball, O'Toole was the varsity baseball
coach at Edison for 18 seasons. He also has coached football in
the City School District at various levels.
A graduate of SUNY Brockport, O'Toole resides in Rochester with
his wife, Maribeth. They are the parents of a son, Brendan, a 1997
Nazareth grad, and a daughter, Megan.
KEVIN
DOWNEY
Assistant Coach
Kevin Downey, former basketball standout at Canisius College,
joined the men's basketball staff as a part-time assistant coach
in December of 2006.
Downey completed his college career last year as Canisius'
sixth all-time scorer with 1,583 points. He started every game of
his four-year career (116 overall) and ranks second all-time in
three-point field goals made with 185. He earned an undergraduate
degree in Biology and a Master's degree in Business Adminstration.
A native of Livonia, N.Y., Downey was a scholastic standout at
Livonia High, where he played for his father, the late Tom Downey.
As a senior at Livonia in 2000-01, Downey was the all-Greater Rochester
co-Player of the Year in leading the Bulldogs to the Section Five
Class B title and a 23-1 overall record.
Downey's mother, Linda Downey, was Nazareth's women's volleyball
coach for four seasons (1999-2002) and has been the coach at the
University of Rochester for the past four seasons. His sister, Christa,
was a three-time first-team All-American in volleyball for Nazareth
from 2000 through 2002.
