NEW YORK, N.Y. (Nov. 21, 2004) – Tournament MVP Ryan Shipley and all-tournament team selection Joe Canori each scored 22 points Sunday for Nazareth as the Golden Flyers completed a weekend sweep in the New York University Tournament for men’s basketball.

The Golden Flyers defeated host NYU in the championship game, 80-74, at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Complex to run their record to 2-0.

Shipley, a senior from Macedon, N.Y., made 9 of 14 shots from the field and 4 of 6 free throws to earn the MVP award. Canori, a freshman guard from Webster, N.Y., was 7 for 12 from the field, including six three-pointers. Freshman guard Brian Ameneiros added 15 points off the bench.

The Golden Flyers led 39-31 at halftime and extended that advantage to as many as 14 points early in the second half. NYU rallied, however, and took a 70-69 lead with 1:43 to go on a basket by Michael DeCorso.

The Golden Flyers secured the lead for good with 1:09 to play when Ameneiros drilled a three-pointer to make the score 72-70. Nazareth then preserved the win at the free throw line by making eight free throws in the last 22 seconds. Ameneiros, Ryan McAdam, Mike DeBlois, and Canori each made two.

Nazareth enjoyed another strong shooting game, making 28 of 51 field goal attempts (55 percent) and 11 of 17 three-pointers.

Nazareth plays another non-league road game Tuesday at the University of Rochester. Game time is 7 p.m.
