MVP Ryan Shipley and all-tournament team selection
Joe Canori each scored 22 points Sunday for Nazareth
as the Golden Flyers completed a weekend sweep
in the New York University Tournament for men’s
basketball.
The Golden Flyers defeated host NYU in the championship
game, 80-74, at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Complex
to run their record to 2-0.
Shipley, a senior from Macedon, N.Y., made 9
of 14 shots from the field and 4 of 6 free throws
to earn the MVP award. Canori, a freshman guard
from Webster, N.Y., was 7 for 12 from the field,
including six three-pointers. Freshman guard Brian
Ameneiros added 15 points off the bench.
The Golden Flyers led 39-31 at halftime and extended
that advantage to as many as 14 points early in
the second half. NYU rallied, however, and took
a 70-69 lead with 1:43 to go on a basket by Michael
DeCorso.
The Golden Flyers secured the lead for good with
1:09 to play when Ameneiros drilled a three-pointer
to make the score 72-70. Nazareth then preserved
the win at the free throw line by making eight
free throws in the last 22 seconds. Ameneiros,
Ryan McAdam, Mike DeBlois, and Canori each made
two.
Nazareth enjoyed another strong shooting game,
making 28 of 51 field goal attempts (55 percent)
and 11 of 17 three-pointers.
Nazareth plays another non-league road game Tuesday
at the University of Rochester. Game time is 7
p.m.
