NAZARETH ROUTS MITCHELL TO FINISH 3RD
Golden Flyers complete first semester at 4-4

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Dec. 11, 2004) – Host Nazareth salvaged a third-place finish in its annual Joe King Tournament Saturday as the Golden Flyers evened their record at 4-4 with a 90-50 men’s basketball victory over Mitchell College.

Senior forward Matt Groot (pictured) came off the bench to score a season-high 16 points to pace Nazareth. Freshman Joe Canori added 15 points and freshman Ryan McAdam had 12.

The Golden Flyers built a 43-26 halftime lead on the strength of 10 points by Groot , who made two of his three three-pointers in the first 20 minutes. McAdam also made two three-pointers in the first half and had nine points.

Nazareth’s lead continued to grow in the second half as the Golden Flyers emptied their bench with every uniformed player scoring at least one field goal.

Senior Ryan Shipley (6 points, 8 rebounds) represented the Golden Flyers on the all-tournament team. Thaddeus Smith (23 points) made the all-tournament team for Mitchell.

Oswego defeated RIT in the championship game, 68-64. Oswego’s Dave Ponza (16 points) was named the tournament MVP. He was joined on the all-tournament team by
Oswego’s Ahmad Mims (14 points), RIT’s Sean Murphy (16 points) and RIT’s Kyle Goff (8 points, 7 rebounds).

Nazareth is off until Jan. 7 when the Golden Flyers open their Empire 8 Conference schedule with a game at St. John Fisher.
