N.Y. (Jan. 7, 2005) – Visiting Nazareth
trimmed St. John Fisher's 15-point halftime lead
to six points with 11 minutes left to play, but
the unbeaten Cardinals pulled away to secure a
77-54 Empire 8 Conference victory over the Golden
Flyers Friday in men's basketball.
The game was the E8 opener for
both teams. Nazareth fell to 4-5 overall. Fisher,
ranked 18th nationally in the latest D3Hoops.com
poll, improved to 9-0.
A poor shooting first-half, which saw Nazareth
make just 8 of 26 shots (31 percent) enabled Fisher
to take a 36-21 lead. The Golden Flyers closed
to within 50-44 on a three-point basket by freshman
Joe Canori (14 points) with 11:05 left.
A 14-2 scoring run by the Cardinals enabled Fisher
to pull away to a 66-48 advantage with 4:43 left.
Ryan Shipley (pictured) scored 18 points and grabbed
13 rebounds for Nazareth, hich was outrebounded
54-38, including 24-12 on the offensive glass.
Nazareth plays another Empire 8 Conference game
Saturday at Alfred University at 4 p.m. (WHTK-AM
1280).
