ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Jan. 31, 2005) -- Joe Canori, a freshman guard on the Nazareth College men's basketball team, has been named Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Week for the seven-day period ending Jan. 29.

A native of Webster, N.Y. and a graduate of Webster Thomas High School, Canori averaged 15 points in three Empire 8 Conference games last week. He had 17 points in a 74-60 home-court loss to RIT last Tuesday, then scored 10 in a 57-53 loss at Utica last Friday. He capped off the week with an 18-point effort in Nazareth's 82-56 victory at Hartwick last Saturday.

Canori leads the Golden Flyers in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per game. He has a team-best 38 three-point baskets and is shooting 88 percent (30-for-34) from the free-throw line. It marks the second week in a row and fourth time this season that Canori has been named E8 Rookie of the Week.

The Golden Flyers (7-11 overall, 2-5 E8) return to action this weekend for a pair of Empire 8 home games. Nazareth hosts Alfred Friday at 8 p.m. and St. John Fisher Saturday at 4 p.m.
