ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Feb. 4, 2005) -- Alfred's Chris
Lemasters sank two free throws with :09 left Friday
for the winning points as the visiting Saxons
edged Nazareth, 63-62, in an exciting men's basketball
game at the Kidera Gymnasium.
The defeat drops Nazareth to 2-6
in Empire 8 Conference play and 7-12 overall.
Alfred imporved to 4-4 and 10-9.
Nazareth had taken a 62-60 on
a basket by Brian Ameneiros (pictured) with :29
left. After a Nazareth foul, Alfred's Ryan Clemenson
sank one of two free throws with :15 left.
Nazareth's Leon Hill had a chance
to extend the Golden Flyers' lead at the other
end, but he missed the front end of a one-and-one
opportunity with :14 left. Hill then fouled Lemasters
to set the stage for the winning free throws.
Ameneiros then missed a desperation three-point
attempt as time expired.
Nazareth led 30-27 at halftime,
but Alfred rallied and led by as many as seven
points in the second half. Nazareth staged a comeback
of its own as junior Mike DeBlois (9 points) hit
three three-pointers in the second half. He tied
the score at 55 on a long-range shot, then scored
again with 1:24 left to tie the score at 60-60.
Freshman Joe Canori led the Golden
Flyers with 16 points. Alfred's Dillon Stein had
game highs in both points (21) and rebounds (12).
Quentin Bryant added 13 points.
Nazareth hosts St. John Fisher
Saturday at 4 p.m. (WHTK-AM 1280 and WYSL-AM 1040).
