Nazareth College Arts Center 2008-2009 Subscription Series Season

Renovation Tour

 

Nazareth College Arts Center proudly announces its 2008-2009 subscription series season Renovation Tour replete with world-class dance from companies based in Russia and Rochester; an imaginative year of children’s theatre; non-partisan political comedy to cap off a contentious election year; a hot Irish band to top off St. Patrick’s Day; Olympics’ worthy physical theatre from China; and a terrifying re-creation of Orson Welles’ ground breaking radio broadcast that caused mass hysteria in the tense days before America entered World War II. The Renovation Tour will take Arts Center patrons on artistic jaunts around the picturesque Nazareth College campus and “dancing down the street” to performances at Pittsford’s Sutherland High and Calkins Road Middle Schools and East Rochester High School.

Garth Fagan Dance celebrates its 38th season in Rochester with programs that feature a local premiere as well as classic and contemporary favorites from the Company’s repertoire.  Fagan is incomparable, revelatory choreography is rife with movement invention, punctuated by calm; his dancers are nothing short of extraordinary.

The Capitol Steps  December 31, 2008 at 6:30 and 10:00 p.m., Shults Center, $55

 

Enter the world of nonpartisan political musical satire – in a special comedy club at Nazareth’s Shults Center created for the event. New Year’s Eve festivities will also include a complimentary glass of champagne, free noisemakers, and live music by the Steve Greene Trio . To enhance patrons enjoyment - scrumptious desserts, coffee and champagne for sale in our New Year’s Eve bistro.

 

The National Acrobats of China  Sunday, March 22, 2009 at 7:00 p.m., Pittsford’s Sutherland High School, $50

 

Nazareth College Arts Center, on the heels of the spectacular Beijing Olympics,’ mesmerizes and mystifies patrons with this dazzling production incorporating martial arts, traditional music, acrobatics, and illusion from China. Founded in June 1956, The National Acrobats of China is one of the most celebrated and influential big acrobatic troupes in the world.

 

David Munnelly Band  Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. Calkin’s Road Middle School, $40

 

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with the multiple award-winning David Munnelly Band whose wild and free style is a fusion of West Mayo and Irish Swing. Former Chieftain Munnelly and his band create “Pure Irish Magic” through their contemporary reinterpretation of the music of the 1920’s most widely associated with The Flanagan Brothers.

 

L.A. Theatre Works in The War of the Worlds and The Lost World   Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 8:00 p.m., Pittsford’s Sutherland High School, $50

 

Nazareth College Arts Center presents L.A. Theatre Works, America’s premiere radio theatre company, for a special back-to-back double bill of chills, thrills and great literature as they present two masterpieces of science fiction and adventure: War of the Worlds and The Lost World. This unique live theatre experience stars headlining actors from the Sci-Fi Channel, Star Trek and X-Files.

 

Russian National Ballet Theatre in Swan Lake  Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 8:00 p.m., Pittsford Sutherland High School, $60

 

Russian National Ballet Theatre brings together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies in an independent new company within the framework of Russian classic ballet. Leading dancers from across Russia along with stars of the Bolshoi and Kirov Ballets forged under choreographer Radchenko's direction - staging exciting new productions of timeless classics such as Swan Lake, Giselle, Paquita, and Carmen.

Rochester City Ballet in The Firebird and the completion of LumaVoce   May 2 and 3, 2009, Canandaigua Academy, $10-30

 

Russian ballet and new contemporary choreography by award winning choreographer Jamie Leverett, exceptionally performed by Rochester City Ballet (RCB). RCB is widely considered one of the best regional ballet companies in the United States. Renovation Tour audiences will see the completion of LumaVoce, which premiered to great acclaim at the Nazareth College Arts Center in 2007-2008. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow   October 18, 19, 25, 26, 2008 at 2:00 p.m., Big Top in The Grove, $15, 75 minutes, recommended for grades two and up.

 

Nazareth College Arts Center and Rochester Children’s Theatre bring classic American literature to the stage in their seasonally spooky production of Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow – in a heated tent on the beautiful Nazareth College campus grounds. Full of action, excitement, a headless horseman, and even a pumpkin or two, this play brings to life the rich language of American folklore and New York state history.

 

Stuart Little   November 22 and 23, 2008 at 2:00 p.m., Shults Center, $12, 60 minutes, recommended for Pre-K through grade two.

 

Nazareth College Arts Center and Rochester Children’s Theatre present Joseph Robinette’s delightful dramatization of E.B. White’s classic story of the many adventures and maneuverings of the endearing Stuart Little. This charming story-theatre production follows the mild-mannered mouse as he strives to survive in a “real people’s” world.

 

A Child’s Christmas in Wales   December 13 & 20 at 7:00 p.m. and December 14 & 21 at 4:00 p.m., Paul and Judy Linehan Chapel, $12, 60 minutes, recommended for grade 3 and up.

 

Nazareth College Arts Center and Rochester Children’s Theatre bring Dylan Thomas’ beloved and poetic short story to life for older children and adults. This intimate, seasonal reading/production, in the beautiful Linehan Chapel, will feature two extraordinary RCT actors.

 

Busytown  December 14, 2008 and January 4, 10, 11, 2009 at 2:00 p.m., Shults Center, $15, 75 minutes, recommended for Pre-K and up

 

What do people do all day? Nazareth College Arts Center and Rochester Children’s Theatre answer Richard Scarry’s literary question in their charming stage production of Busytown. Audiences explore Busytown with Huckle Cat in a play that is full of vibrant singing, dancing, and exuberant life with much to do and friends to visit – just as imagined by a child. Adapted by Kevin Kling with music by Michael Koerner and lyrics by Kling and Koerner from Scarry’s classic book What do People do All Day?

 

Rochester City Ballet in Peter and the Wolf   January 31 and February 1, 2009, East Rochester High School.

 

A Russian Fantasy brought to life on the Arts Center Renovation Tour by Rochester City Ballet – widely considered one of the best regional ballet companies in the United States. This exceptional performance will be a classic introduction to dance for all ages. Narnia  March 14, 15, 21, 2009 at 2:00 p.m., Paul and Judy Linehan Chapel, $15, 60 minutes, recommended for grades two through five.

 

Nazareth College Arts Center and Rochester Children’s Theatre bring the most famous of the Chronicles of Narnia series stories –The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe – to life in this excellent musical adaptation by Jules Tasca (book), Thomas Tierney (music), and Ted Drachman (lyrics). This heroic C.S. Lewis tale of courage and friendship- fun for audiences of all ages – is filled with enchantment and adventure and highlights the triumph of good over evil.

 

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast   May 16, 17, 23, 24, 2009 at 2:00 p.m., Big Top on the Arts Center Grounds, $20, 90 minutes, recommended for grades K through 12.

 

Nazareth College Arts Center and Rochester Children’s Theatre invite audiences to step into the enchanted world of this modern Broadway classic with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, and book by Linda Woolverton. Audiences will be transported by this vibrant production of a “tale as old as time.” Disney’s Beauty and the Beast teaches positive values while offering family theatre at its best.
