GR/ILL is a series of courses designed for those students interested in gaining experience in illustration and graphic design. Students may enter a program such as studio art and then work with their advisors to focus their studies in the graphics/illustration areas.
Since illustration and design work is simply not an activity of self-expression, communication with the art director or designer is a must. This begins with pencil sketches and roughs done by hand and moves toward a sophisticated finish, which is often done on the computer.
Sketches are simply to communicate a spark of a concept. They are a kind of visual shorthand. Then, after a 'rough' is completed by hand, the students can crop, resize, colorize, airbrush, use bordering and typography, layout painting techniques, etc. all on the computer. The choice of a finish medium is usually the option of the student. More often then not, advanced illustration students will choose to execute their finishes digitally.
Drawings can be scanned and altered in limitless ways using Adobe Photoshop. This is an incredible tool for color visualization, playing with composition, distortion use, filters, etc.
Adobe InDesign helps illustrators with professional looking layout while building their portfolios.
Adobe Illustrator is a favorite with some Advanced Illustrators.
As technology increases, the myriad of visual options the computer offers is a great compliment to the 'hands on' process. Often students will go back and forth between a printout, reworking with pastels or paint. The finished piece is then scanned again and typography/borders, etc. are added. The finished pieces often appear to be already published and look more professional in their portfolios.
Digital cameras are frequently used here and in the painting classes. Reference is imperative, and often a quick printout of some kind of referenced object will save a painting from going wrong, or being skewed.
At Nazareth good drawing skills are a pre-requisite. We don't encourage our illustrators and designers to simply find and assemble anything from the reservoir of available images. We insist that they be able to draw first. Then with the asset of the incredible visual resources technology offers us, we try to go beyond the merely useful to produce a successful piece of art or illustration. We try to make it extraordinary.
