Nazareth Announces Music Business Degree
The music business industry is a thriving place to be, but how do concert promoters, tour publicists and booking managers get their start? Nazareth College wants to help students find those answers with a new undergraduate program for students wishing to pursue the many facets of music and business. The Bachelor of Science Music/Business Degree will give students the knowledge and skills necessary to access a variety of occupations in the music industry as well as prepare them for graduate study in the field or for an advanced degree in business or entertainment law. The program begins in Fall 2008.
The Music/Business program is set up to help students gain access to a variety of occupations, including: publicist and artist manager, booking agent, concert promoter, entrepreneur, retail sales, music publishing, tour coordinator, tour publicist, sound engineering, and recording technicians.
“The Bachelor of Science degree in Music/Business allows students interested in music the opportunity to study their art, as well as the opportunity to determine how that art can produce income,” said Chair of the Music Department James Douthit, D.M.A. The degree is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), as well as the State of New York. NASM awarded a commendation to the department for its curricular design of the courses that highlight the intersection of music and business.
For admission requirements, please visit www.naz.edu and search for Music Business.
In Less Than 120 Seconds, You Can Impact Nazareth

In less time than it takes to pop a bag of popcorn, you can help Nazareth provide more student financial assistance as well as offer the highest quality learning and living environment for our students. Last year, 20% of alumni gave back to their alma mater in support of the next generation of students at Naz. Together let’s reach higher. Our fiscal year ends June 30th. Your gift counts!
Make your gift online to the Nazareth Fund at www.naz.edu/makeagift today.
Presidential Perspective: the Blog of Nazareth College's Daan Braveman
For an insider’s view of the goings on at Nazareth College, be sure to visit the blog of President Daan Braveman, one of the newest additions to the college’s website. Here you will read about campus events, see photos of current students, and learn what is important to Nazareth and the community, all coming directly from the keyboard of our ninth president.
“College presidents often find one of the biggest parts of their jobs is staying connected to the students, faculty and staff on their campus," said President Braveman. “This blog is giving me a new way to interact with many different people. I look forward to getting great feedback on my blog from our campus and the greater community.”

Alumni Spotlight
Outstanding Alumni Award Winner Rose Marie Capanna Fagan ’65
Rose Marie Fagan ’65 has earned a national reputation for transforming the way society views aging and treats its oldest citizens through her work as founding executive director of the Pioneer Network in Culture Change, a national grassroots movement dedicated to creating a meaningful role for the aged.
In 1997 Fagan helped coordinate the initial meeting of the newly formed network. Held in Rochester, the gathering drew 33 people from across the country who shared a vision for revolutionizing elder care. Today, the Pioneer Network has a $1.6 million budget and its annual conference last year drew 1,100 people from 46 states and Canada, England, and Australia. Thirty six states have formed advocacy groups called “culture change coalitions” to improve the quality of care for the elderly.
One of the Pioneer Network’s most important accomplishments has been its relationship with the national Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS), which helps craft expectations that nursing homes must meet. CMS hosts online seminars on culture change and encourages national discussions of Pioneer Network principles. Its reach is extensive; 1.5 million Americans live in the country’s 16,400 nursing homes on any given day, according to the agency.
Monroe County itself is home to 34 nursing homes and many have improved as a result of Fagan’s work. Notably, Fagan has partnered with Rev. Garth Brokaw, the president and CEO of Fairport Baptist Homes Caring Ministries in Perinton. The facility is a national model of elderly care, replacing traditional dormitory style rooms with “households” and giving residents autonomy over their schedules.

Nazareth’s G.O.L.D. (Graduate Of Last Decade) Alumni Award Winner Ian Prichard ’98
Six years ago, Ian Prichard ’98 and his friend Joe Sternberg started a delivery ski rental business in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Black Tie Ski Rentals has since revolutionized the ski and snowboard rental process. Prichard and Sternberg’s company is one of the originators of the industry surrounding the idea of ski rental, and they feature delivery, personalized service, online reservations, and high quality equipment.
The two men have grown the business into the largest operation of its kind with 10 locations in North America, from Aspen to Whistler.
Theirs is one of the most innovative ideas to hit the major resorts in recent years and the business has been featured in local and national publications
and websites, including Ski.com, Everett Potter’s Travel Report, and The Washington Post.
Entrepreneurship, however, isn’t Prichard and Sternberg’s only focus. Black Tie Ski Rentals is a company with a conscience, emphasizing both sustainability and philanthropy in its business practices. Black Tie is a Gold Planet‐certified business, integrating sustainability into its mission and educating employees on environmental issues. The founders also encourage giving back to the community: employees are encouraged to car pool to work and volunteer for non‐profit organizations, and the company supplies equipment to Sunshine Kids, an organization dedicated to providing programming for children battling cancer.
School of Management Dean Jerry Zappia has been duly impressed by the industriousness of graduates such as Prichard. As Zappia, who nominated Prichard for the G.O.L.D. Award, explains, "Ian’s business fits our mission on two counts – it is profoundly entrepreneurship, and Ian and his partner run it in the highest ethical manner."
