Nazareth Chosen for Princeton Review's "Best 368 Colleges: 2009 Edition"
Nazareth College is one of the nation’s best institutions for undergraduate education, according to The Princeton Review. Nazareth is one of only four schools in the nation to be added to the forthcoming edition of The Best 368 Colleges: 2009 Edition. The book will be available in bookstores in late July 2008.
“We chose Nazareth College as one of our ‘best’ undergraduate colleges for this, our flagship college guide, based on several criteria we consider when reviewing schools for the book. First, we must have a high regard for their academic programs and other offerings. Our selections also take into account institutional data we collect from the schools and the opinions of students attending them whom we survey. We also greatly value the feedback we get about schools from our college-savvy staff across the country as well as from students, educators and parents who use our services and books," said Robert Franek, V.P. & Publisher-The Princeton Review.
“The announcement that our college was selected for this honor has created a buzz of excitement on the Nazareth campus,” said Nazareth President Daan Braveman. “Nazareth is extremely proud of its work to earn this distinction.”
“The Best 368 Colleges: 2009 Edition presents a wide range of colleges in the book. Only about 10% of the colleges in the nation are in it, and they vary by region, size, selectivity and character,” said Franek. “In our opinion, these are ‘the crème of the crop’ institutions for undergraduates in America." Nazareth College Arts Center Renovation Plans Unveiled
Nazareth College Arts Center unveiled the plans for its $9 million renovation for the first time on March 7 during a news conference in the Arts Center’s Callahan Theater. Nazareth President Daan Braveman, joined by Arts Center Director Lindsay Reading Korth and LaBella Associates architect Jeff Roloson, unveiled the drawings and renderings for the project, which is on schedule to get underway this month.
The main highlights of the project include: creating a formal entrance to the Arts Center; constructing a larger, secure art gallery; transforming the thrust style stage to a proscenium or “picture frame” stage; installation of a stage fly system to allow technical crews to move sets and lights quickly on- and off-stage; installation of a sprung floor to absorb the shocks of dancers’ and actors’ movements; replacing the lighting, temperature and air circulation systems; and revamping the seating (finished theater will have 1,000 seats) complete with a cross-over aisle for better accessibility.
“These enhancements to the Nazareth College Arts Center will position us as a premier mid-size theater for the Rochester community,” said Nazareth President Daan Braveman. “When the Arts Center re-opens in February 2009, the renovations will enhance our strong fine and performing arts educational and cultural programs, and make us a regional destination as a first-class dance and performance venue.”

Alumni Invitational Review of “What Are They Doing Now?” in City
Rebecca Rafferty of City newspaper offers her review of the Nazareth College invitational alumni exhibition, which featured the work of both emerging and established artists at the Arts Center in the Colacino Gallery. The exhibition showcased the work of cartoonists, painters, printmakers, jewelry designers, photographers, sculptors, potters and graphic designers including Mike Carroll, Alan Pascuzzi, Tom Galambos, Elena Dubas, Sara Lalik, Adrienne Stiles, Darren Brennessel, Jim Hill, Paul Waida, Mike Thompson, Jennelle Hart, Jamie Franki, Penny Naselaris, Dale Klein, and Sarah Egan.
“Nazareth helps to shape artists who focus on beauty in the world - as was shown in Elena Dubas' stunning digital photos taken in exotic India - and also those who examine existence introspectively, as represented by Tom Galambos' two self-portraits…. This show spoke well of the school's ability to attract a diverse crowd of artists, and to foster that diversity while they are in attendance,” noted Rafferty. Melissa Rozelle ’02, ’06G Published in the Music Educators National Conference Journal
Last summer, Melissa Rozelle ’02, ’06G was approached by the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) to write an article about teaching students with special needs in the music classroom. Her article, "Everyone Succeeds: How to Meet the Needs of All Students in the Music Room” is geared toward pre-service teachers and was recently published in the Collegiate MENC online journal. To read the full article, please click here.
As a frequent presenter on music for special learners, Rozelle attended the following conferences: New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Summer and Winter Conferences, NYSSMA Early Childhood Music Conference, and the MENC Regional Conference. She has also presented at various school districts and American Orff Schulwerk Association local chapters around New York State. In November, Rozelle will be presenting four sessions on music for special learners at the American Orff Sculwerk National Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina.
This past fall, Rozelle taught two classes at Nazareth College; Music for Special Learners for both undergraduate and graduate students. She anticipates teaching those classes again along with Psychology of Music for graduate students. Dr. Mary Carlson, Associate Professor and Director of Music Education at Nazareth said, "We are proud of Melissa’s successful career thus far and are pleased that she has been able to teach for us. She certainly represents the best of our graduates!"
“I could not be doing any of these things if not for Nazareth. Nazareth was one of the only schools that would allow me to major in both music therapy and music education, which gave me a unique perspective on the needs of special learners in both disciplines,” says Rozelle. “All of my professors were always there throughout undergraduate, graduate, and beyond to help if I needed guidance. It is a pleasure to work with them now to teach new teachers!”
Rozelle graduated from Nazareth College with a bachelor’s degree in music and she earned master’s degrees in music therapy and music education. Currently, she teaches general music for kindergarten, 3rd and 4th grade at Northwood Elementary School in the Hilton Central School District.
Faculty/Staff Spotlight
Nazareth Fulbright Scholar Dr. Scott Campbell In Hungary
Assistant Professor of Philosophy Scott Campbell received a Faculty Fulbright award for the spring semester of 2008 and he is currently teaching courses in American philosophy at the University of Pannonia in Veszprém, Hungary.
Dr. George Eisen, Executive Director for International Education, has requested Nazareth Fulbright scholars to provide their personal and professional impressions as they represent Nazareth College on a global level. Dr. Campbell’s report offers a glimpse into both his scholarly activities while abroad, as well as into the many experiences of cultural immersion, such as salsa dancing with 250 Hungarians. Along with these entertaining episodes, it is rewarding to see how Nazareth faculty members are changing the landscape of Hungarian higher education.
An excerpt from Dr. Campbell’s report:
“Hello from Hungary! Or perhaps I should say Jó napot kivánok. As you know, that means 'hello', and it's a mouthful. Just a week after my arrival, I found myself still trying to learning it. I think I have it down now…. Salsa dancing class is a handy way to learn the Hungarian language, as well as to learn salsa dancing. Indeed, any attempt by visitors to immerse themselves into Hungarian life is met with open arms, and this is especially true with the language. Every time I try to speak Hungarian, people smile at me. They might be laughing at me a bit, too, but it all seems very good natured.”

Spring Update
The men's basketball team won its first Empire 8 Conference Tournament title earlier this month, defeating rival St. John Fisher by a 64-63 score in Ithaca, N.Y. Junior Ryan McAdam was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player after scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the title game. With the win, the Golden Flyers earned the Empire 8's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament where they faced off against Rhode Island College in the opening round at Richard Stockton College in Pomona, N.J. However, Nazareth's season came to an end as the Anchormen held off the Golden Flyers by a score of 77-73. Following the season, sophomore Corey McAdam, a first team all-Empire 8 selection, was named to the 2008 All-District first team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
Senior Emily Lesher and sophomore Lauren McKinney competed at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio earlier this month. A mere two-tenths of a second separated Lesher from a national championship for the second year in a row in the 400-yard IM. The All-American also placed fourth in the 200-yard IM and ninth in the 200-yard backstroke.
Senior Nick Stenuf finished fourth in the 800-meter with a time of 1:52.85 at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships hosted by Ohio Northern. Stenuf automatically qualified for the national meet in the 800-meter run after winning the ECAC title in that event for the second time in three years.
