Gov. Spitzer Names Nazareth President Daan Braveman to IOLA Board

Governor Eliot Spitzer has appointed President Daan Braveman to the board of trustees for the Interest on Lawyer Account (IOLA) Fund. Since 1983, the accumulated interest on IOLA accounts has been used to help fund not-for-profit programs that make civil legal assistance available to nearly three million disadvantaged New Yorkers.

The new appointments come at a time when IOLA funding is increasing for civil legal services programs that prevent homelessness, combat domestic violence and preserve healthcare.

Daan Braveman is one of four new appointees to the board. “These … individuals offer decades of professional experiences that will help to guide the IOLA Fund,” said Governor Spitzer. “Their contributions will enhance the already impressive support for civil legal services that the IOLA fund makes possible.”

"Battle of the Beaks" Charity Game

“The Battle of the Beaks” took place on Tuesday, January 15 when St. John Fisher visited Nazareth for a doubleheader in men’s and women’s basketball. The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in collaboration with the Nazareth athletics department raised $6,300 to help children and their families at Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong.

Michael P. Fahy, assistant athletic trainer at Nazareth College remarked, “The inaugural Battle of the Beaks for Strong Kids was an incredible success thanks to a very dedicated and energetic group of student-athletes that put on the event.  Thank you to the entire Nazareth community for their support of this event!  We hope to grow upon the fundraiser in years to come!”

The proceeds from “Battle of the Beaks” will be combined with another fundraiser SAAC is putting together for the hospital in February, and they hope to raise a grand total of close to $10,000.

Father Shannon's 90th Birthday Celebration

Father Shannon enjoyed the company of nearly 200 Nazareth College alumni, family, and friends as he celebrated his 90th birthday on campus. Many cards were received and the William H. Faculty/Staff Spotlight

Dr. Thomas Lappas on Rochester’s 1st Native American Film Festival

Last summer, Dr. Thomas Lappas, assistant professor of history, collaborated with Marie Watkins, director of the center for service learning, Beverly Brown, associate professor of biology, and Marrlee Burgess, director of student transition/the first year center, along with other faculty and staff as well as members of several area colleges to form a partnership with the Friends of Ganondagan, a local group dedicated to preserving and promoting Native American history and culture. Named The Rochester Area Native American Studies Consortium, the mission of this community-wide organization is to encourage Native American studies through community programming and curricula development in the Rochester area. These efforts are designed to reach both American Indians and non-Indians.

Out of this consortium, Rochester’s first Native American Film Festival was born. The festival, to be held from February 4 through April 8, 2008, will screen films that depict the dynamic complexity of the Native American experience, exploring the issues of identity, stereotypes, history, myth, spirituality and the reality of today’s Native cultures.

Running at various area venues, more than 20 films by or about Native Americans will be screened and discussed by filmmakers, actors and professors who will provide context for each of the films. The first screening, of the 1992 animated Disney film Pocahontas, will take place in the Callahan Theatre on the Nazareth College Campus on Monday, February 4 at 6 p.m.

“The purpose of the Rochester Native American Film Festival is to involve the community in a fun, educational, and exciting way and to encourage the public to take a critical look at Native American issues and discuss them in an open forum,” says Lappas. His research and writing addresses Native American-White relations in the Colonial and Early National periods.

Visit here for more info about the first annual Rochester Native American Film Festival and view the complete schedule.

Winter Sports

Men’s and women’s basketball fared well at the JP Morgan Chase Scholarship Tournament during the semester break. Both teams advanced to the championship game against the University of Rochester with the women’s team becoming the lowest seed in the history of the tournament to advance to the title game.

For the first time in school history, the Nazareth men's and women's basketball teams will travel to Stevens Institute of Technology for a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 1 in Hoboken, N.J. The women's team (6-11, 2-6 Empire 8) faces off at 6 p.m. while the men's team (13-4, 6-2 E8) squares off against the Ducks at 8 p.m. Alumni in the area are encouraged to attend the game and meet with other alums. General admission tickets are $3. For directions to the game, log onto: http://www.stevens.edu/main/maps/driving_directions.html.

The women’s swimming and diving team is 8-2 overall in dual meet competition with a recent win over Fredonia and a loss to Empire 8 rival Ithaca. In the meet, senior Emily Lesher broke her own pool record in winning the 200 backstroke (2:10.78).

The seasons have also started for the men’s volleyball team as well as the men’s and women’s indoor track & field squads.

Check out the Nazareth athletics web site to stay up to date with all the Golden Flyers action, including live game web casts.
