Nazareth Receives President’s Honor Roll Award for Service

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) named Nazareth College to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll With Distinction for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth. Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.

Nazareth’s numerous distinctive community service projects helped the College earn a spot on the selective honor roll including: Orientation Day of Service; Partners for Learning, an innovative tutoring and mentoring program that engages Nazareth students in partnerships with children, teachers, and staff of seven urban education sites; and Partners for Serving, a unique program that empowers Nazareth students to serve their community while helping to pay for their college tuition.

In congratulating the winners, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings said, “Americans rely on our higher education system to prepare students for citizenship and the workforce. We look to institutions like these to provide leadership in partnering with local schools to shape the civic, democratic and economic future of our country.”

Nazareth College Supports the Mental Health Association

On Saturday, February 9, more than 400 people teed off at the 14th Annual Skyway Open to benefit the Programs of the Mental Health Association.

Nazareth College was there, sponsoring one of the 18 miniature golf holes winding through the Clarion Hotel, the skyway to the convention center, and the convention center. Student athletes from the men’s lacrosse team, including Brandon O’Toole, Joel Tully, Eric Schuenberg and Brian Orr, and women’s golf team members Meg Hardy and Trista Twomy staffed the Naz Athletics-themed hole, greeting and encouraging golfers both young and old.

The Mental Health Association is a community based organization that serves people with mental health disorders through community based programs and educational offerings.

Rochester Native Jamie Franki '83 to Attend Alumni Exhibition, February 29

On Friday, February 29, Jamie Franki '83 will return to his hometown for the "What Are They Doing Now" Invitational Alumni Exhibition at the Margaret Colacino Gallery at the Nazareth College Arts Center from 5-7 p.m., where his numismatic designs are one of the highlights of the show.

Franki is a tenured Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he coordinates the illustration program in the department of art and art history. For two years, he was a master designer in the United States Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program. In 2005, his American Bison Nickel reverse design was selected for a six-month minting. This Nickel was awarded a “COTY” (Coin of the Year Award) as the Most Popular World Coin of 2005. In January of 2006, his Jefferson 1800 Nickel obverse design began its long-term run on America’s new and historic forward-facing circulating coin.

Franki received his bachelor's degree in art from Nazareth College and his MFA Degree in Illustration from Syracuse University. In addition to his twenty-two years of teaching art at the College and University level, Franki maintains an artistic practice in exhibition, numismatic design, and visual communication. His artwork has been exhibited in venues including the Society of Illustrators’ Museum of American Illustration in N.Y.C., The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Mass., the San Francisco Art Directors’ Club, and the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame.

“I didn’t know what my future would hold when I graduated from Nazareth. I did know that my experience as an undergraduate gave me the tools to think and grow as an artist, and I utilize lessons learned here in my everyday work as a college professor and a designer/illustrator,” says Franki. “It is heartwarming to ‘come back home’ after all this time to be a part of this show!”

Greatly influenced by the artists of the Golden Age of American illustration, Jamie Franki strives to create narrative artwork that is rich in detail, expression and accessibility. He resides in Concord, N.C. with his wife Penny. Click here for more information on the exhibition.

Faculty/Staff Spotlight

Dr. William C. Cala Joins the School of Education as Visiting Professor

William C. Cala, Ed.D., former interim Rochester City School District Superintendent, has joined Nazareth’s School of Education as a visiting professor of education. Cala’s primary focus will be to lead efforts to analyze the feasibility of a Metro School at Nazareth, which would bring city and suburban students together to study. He will also play an integral role in implementing the plans for Nazareth’s Center for Urban Education, which is funded by the Frontier Endowment for Urban Education that was established in 1998.

“Bill Cala, one of Rochester’s most recognized names in education, is a perfect fit for Nazareth, and the College is extremely excited to have him join the ranks in the School of Education,” said Nazareth President Daan Braveman. “His experience and his views on urban education will be an asset as Nazareth continues to be a well-known and respected institution for a career in education.”

Cala said of his new assignment, “I wouldn’t take this position with any other local institution. We need to make schools look like the world, allowing urban and suburban children to learn together and from each other, and Nazareth has the tools and faculty to help make it happen.”

Nazareth College’s School of Education is also in the development stages for the new Frontier Center for Urban Education on campus, and Cala’s position will allow him to help the committee plan and launch the center’s opening, hopefully within the next year.

“After leading the Rochester City Schools for most of the past year, we are honored that Bill chose Nazareth as his next stop,” said Timothy Glander, Dean of Nazareth’s School of Education. “The fact that he is here speaks highly of our talented faculty and staff.”
