The CYD minor greatly values the work of private and public youth development organizations that focus upon building on the strengths of youth. The Search Institute organization created a list of 40 developmental assets that are statistically proven to be critical in the development of youth. The CYD 201 course explores these assets in detail.
Recently, Search Institute published an article in its December 2008 newsletter regarding the Community-Based Youth Development minor offered at Nazareth College:
"At Nazareth College in Rochester, New York, Dr. Marie Watkins, Associate Professor and the director of the Center for Service Learning (CSL), teaches a service-learning based course called Community Youth Development. The course is a requirement for the 18 credit academic interdisciplinary Minor in Community Youth Development. Officers from Youth Voice One Vision (YVOV) and Youth As Resources (YAR) have a co-lecturing role in the course, connecting their lived experiences to the Developmental Assets to and the qualities of an effective youth worker."
