Jason K. Stanbro '05
Research Scientist, Bausch & Lomb
Have you ever wondered how the contacts and solutions you
use for your contacts is developed, and who would be smart enough to
develop the chemicals to keep something like a contact in tact? The
answer is Jason Stanbro, a Nazareth graduate and research scientist from Vision Care Research and Development at Bausch & Lomb.
Stanbro
recently gave a lecture on campus entitled "Contact Lenses: Enhancing
Vision through Chemistry," as part of the spring seminar Chemistry
Department lecture series. As a Chemistry major, Stanbro was
trained beyond the basics of the lab. He also learned everything from
the preparation to completion of each experiment. “The hands on
experience at Nazareth helped me really prepare for my future. At
Nazareth we got one-on-one time with the professors that you don’t get
at larger universities.”

Shannon Bice Olsson '99
Project Leader, Department
of Evolutionary Neuroethology
Shannon Olsson is currently serving as Project Leader in the Department
of Evolutionary Neuroethology at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical
Ecology in Jena, Germany. Her journey to Germany truly began with Nazareth. With encouragement to apply for a Fulbright at Naz, she was fortunate to spend a year at Lund University in Sweden following her graduation from Nazareth in 1999.
After receiving her doctorate from Cornell University in 2005, she moved to Los Angeles to study marine chemocommunication at UCLA. Currently, she is part of an EU sponsored project to develop a new class of Technology for infochemical communication based upon the pheromone communication system of moths. This chemical messaging technology can be used for such applications as search and rescue operations and unexploded ordinance and mine localization.
Shannon was awarded the Nazareth GOLD Alumni Award for young alums at Alumni Weekend ‘09. This is the highest honor Nazareth bestows on alumni from the past decade.

Ann Rossi '02
Postdoctoral Scholar, University of Chicago
Ann attended Nazareth College of Rochester from 1998 to 2002, where she received the
Dean’s Scholar Award. In 2001, she held an internship with Corning
Incorporated in the NMR group of the Characterization Science and
Services Department, researching different formulations of polymer
coatings for optical fibers. In 2002, she graduated Magna Cum Laude
with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.
Shortly thereafter, in
the Fall of 2002, she began graduate studies at the University of
Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She pursued her research
in Pharmacology under the direction of Professor Robert T. Dirksen, and
received the Master of Science degree from the University of Rochester
in 2004. In 2006, she was awarded a Biophysical Society Student Travel
Grant to support her attendance and presentation at the 50th Annual
Biophysical Society Meeting.
From 2006 to 2008, she received
additional training and financial support from a National Institute of
Dental and Craniofacial Research Training Grant. Following graduation,
Ann will be working as a Postdoctoral Scholar for Dr. Elizabeth McNally
at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.

Alicia Monroe Carroll '02
Chemistry Instructor, Nazareth College
Alicia graduated in 2002 from Nazareth College with a B.S. in
Biochemistry. In 2008, she completed her graduate work at The
University of Connecticut Health Center where she earned her Ph.D. in
Biomedical Sciences with a concentration in Molecular Biology and
Biochemistry. Alicia is thrilled to return to Nazareth as a faculty
member and says that, “It is really a dream job for me. I feel very
connected to Nazareth on so many levels and I am honored to have this
opportunity.”

Beth Burns ‘03 Andrew Johnson ‘08
Science teachers, Fairport Central School District
Two of our alumni, Beth Burns ‘G03 and Andrew Johnson U’08 along with Donna Himmelberg (NYS Certification ’91) and Gene Gordon, all Fairport High School science teachers, traveled to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas to take a student designed experiment for a ride on NASA’s Weightless Wonder (also known as the “Vomit Comet”). It was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
NASA joined forces with NSTA (National Science Teachers Association) to sponsor this experience. Teams from around the country competed for a place on the Reduced Gravity Flight. Fairport High School had the only team from New York State chosen to take their experiment to Houston. During the ten day trip, the teachers assembled the student experiment, attended training for the flight and toured the Johnson Space Center.

Jessica Goodman '04
Postdoctoral fellow, Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research
Jessica Goodman, Chemistry Alum (ug '04), was a graduate student in
the laboratory of Alanna Schepartz at Yale University. The Schepartz
lab is well recognized as a leader in chemical biology research and
Professor Schepartz is widely considered to be one of the young rising
stars in this field. Jessica received her Ph.D. in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from
Yale University in 2008. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the
Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, a prestigious research
institute affiliated with MIT.
