Take several hundred new students from a variety of states and backgrounds, put them in rooms with complete strangers, pile on mountains of assigned readings, add the inevitable computer glitches on a day when there are 2 mid-terms papers due and, yes, a problem or two will arise! See below for key resources to help you in your transition.
Office of First Year Resources
Within the Center for Student Success, the Office of First Year Resources works to provide targeted support to students who are new to Nazareth. Learn More
Other Helpful Resources
Calendar of Events
The CSS provides a central location for posting major campus programs and events. We also provide information and directions to Rochester area events and locations when you are ready to venture off-campus. You can also check out the online version of the campus-wide Nazareth events calendar. Learn More
Coaching
The Nazareth Coaching Program is aimed at assisting students to accomplish their academic, social, and personal goals through regular one-on-one motivational meetings. The coach assists, guides, and works to provide students with the skills necessary to succeed and graduate from Nazareth College. For more information on obtaining a coach, please contact Marrlee Burgess at mburges4@naz.edu.
Living-Learning Communities
Living-Learning Communities are programs that facilitate a smooth transition to college by promoting faculty and student interaction. These programs also provide new students with a built-in network of peers with whom they can study and share ideas. The First Year Experience program (FYE) is a popular option for many first-year students at Nazareth. Learn More
New Student Orientation
New Student Orientation takes place several days before the start of classes. The orientation
begins with a convocation ceremony that celebrates new students and
emphasizes the significance of this new journey. Then, throughout the
next few days, students are acclimated by meeting peers and resource
people, engage in community service activities to foster bonding and to
connect to the greater Rochester community, and attend educational
activities with their orientation groups to acquire information on
student life at Nazareth. After Orientation weekend, student orientation
leaders continue to stay in contact informally with students in their
groups to lend further support through this transitional period. Learn More
Parent Support
Parents play an essential role in their students' adjustment to college life and we invite you to contact the CSS about any questions that may come up during the first year. The Director is available to discuss concerns about your new college student, receive feedback on your experience as a Nazareth parent of a first year student, and to advocate for you if the need arises. We also hope that you will encourage your son or daughter to use this office as a resource as well. We look forward to assisting AND learning from you!
Summer Start
The Summer Start Program is an exciting program designed to offer incoming first year students a jump start on the college experience. Students will take 6 college credits while living in the Residence Hall and participate in structured activities designed to acclimate them to the campus and Rochester area. Learn More
Walk-Ins
If you have a problem or just need an ear, come to the CSS. We do more than listen: we also can provide valuable information and help you find answers to questions that you may have about Nazareth and beyond. We also have staff available by appointment should that be more convenient for you. Walk-In hours are determined on a semester-by-semester basis, and can be found on the right-hand side of this page.
