Training Opportunities

Nazareth University Campus Safety provides many opportunities for training and personal development, open to all members of the Nazareth University community. Please see the tabs below for information about each training and how to register.

Training Classes

CPR and AED

Nazareth University partners with online training provider CPR Certified/Indigo Medical Training to provide training and certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AED) in an online format.

Required training: The training is offered for no fee to students, faculty, and staff who require it for their placements, clinical experience, and/or on-campus positions. If you meet this criteria, please contact your academic or employment department to verify the need for the training. The department can then email a request for training to Kevin Riordan, kriorda7@naz.edu.

Non-required training: CPR and AED certifications are also offered directly by the Red Cross (in person), the American Heart Association (in person), and through many online providers. Costs vary and are the responsibility of the student, staff, or faculty member. Location suggestions:

  • Online training - Anyone may access the training from Nazareth's partner, CPR Certified, for a fee ($29.99 for CPR and $39.99 for CPR and First Aid). The class lengths vary based on which class options you choose. You pay directly through the CPR Certified website. This training course results in a 2-year certification. See CPR Certified.
  • In-person training - Pittsford Volunteer Ambulance provides monthly classes in CPR on the first Tuesday of each month from 6 - 10 p.m., following American Heart Association parameters. The costs vary based on which class is taken, between $35 and $60. Pay Pittsford Ambulance directly. Get information and the registration form.

Nazareth University also provides a limited amount of live CPR classes which result in Red Cross certification (for a period of 2 years). The planned classes for the fall 2023 semester are as follows. Please follow the link to reserve your space. Classes are limited to 15 people per class. These classes are free for current students, staff, and faculty.

  • October 13 (Friday) from 1 - 4 p.m. in YWRI 255 - Sign-up link
  • October 18 (Wednesday) from 1 - 4 p.m. in Library Media B - Sign-up link.
Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) Prevention

Any person (staff, faculty, or student) who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids is required to annually complete this training. Additionally, most clinical positions require BBP training before starting.

This training is completely digital through Moodle. You need an active Nazareth account and a Moodle login/password.

BBP Training 2023-2024 is launched and available.

  1. Go to the Naz Moodle Homepage
  2. Log in (if you cannot, contact the Technology and Media Service Desk at 585-389-2111)
  3. Click on the blue arrow at the top right of the screen (open block drawer)
  4. On the right side of the screen, scroll down and click on "Self Enrollable Courses" (right side of page)
  5. Click on "Health and Safety Courses"
  6. Click on "Bloodborne Pathogen Training 2023-2024"
  7. Select "Enroll Me"

Once you complete the BBP training, your certification certificate will be available for download and/or printing.

Driver Training

Who must complete driver training?

  • Any faculty, staff member, or student intending to drive a campus vehicle. There is no fee.

What is required to complete driver training?

1) Five parts must be completed before you can drive any college vehicle:

  • Defensive driving class
  • Moodle training class
  • DMV driver record search
  • Hands-on assessment* (see part 3)
  • Full University policy

Part 1: Defensive Driving Class. You need to complete only one of these two options and provide a copy of your completion certification to the Campus Safety Department.

About 45 minutes to complete, completely online, no charge to active Nazareth students, staff, and faculty. If you are prompted for a Affiliation ID, please enter 8A51Q688653.

  • Option #2: Many agencies provide a NYS DMV-approved Defensive Driving Class (also called a Point & Insurance Reduction Program or PIRP class). This 6-hour option gives you a 10% discount on your auto insurance for three years and up to 4 points may be reduced from your license. Any fees for this option are your responsibility and will not be paid/reimbursed by Nazareth University.

Part 2: Approved Driver Orientation and Safety Training (Moodle Course)

You must complete the Nazareth specific approved driver training. This training is completely digital through Moodle. You need an active Nazareth account and a Moodle login/password. Here are the steps to access the training.

    1. Go to the Naz Moodle Homepage
    2. Log in (if you cannot, contact the Technology and Media Service Desk at 585-389-2111)
    3. Click on the blue arrow at the top right of the screen (open block drawer)
    4. On the right side of the screen, scroll down and click on "Self Enrollable Courses" (right side of page)
    5. Click on "Health and Safety Courses"
    6. Click on "Approved Driver Orientation and Safety Training"
    7. Select "Enroll Me"

At the conclusion of this Moodle training, a certificate of completion will be issued to you. Please email this certificate to CampusSafety@naz.edu

Part 3: Hands-on Assessment*: You must complete a hands-on driver's assessment which covers the specific operations for approved drivers of Nazareth University as well as reviews driving best practices. This training is completed in small groups of 2-3 people and takes about 30 minutes to completed. There is no fee, hands-on sessions can be scheduled by emailing Campus Safety at CampusSafety@naz.edu.

* You are exempt from completing this hands-on assessment if you have had your full license (Class D) for a minimum of 2 years. A full license is defined as one with no restrictions. Learners permits are not acceptable as a full license.

Part 4: A Search of your Driver’s Record (also called a driver’s abstract) is required.

This abstract has any violations/tickets, the status of your license, and any accidents you have been involved in. If you have excessive violations/tickets, multiple accidents, or an expired/suspended license, you may not be authorized to drive for Nazareth University.

  • If your license is from New York State, Campus Safety can obtain your driver’s abstract. Bring your license to Campus Safety so a photocopy can be made. There is no fee.
  • If your license is from another state, it is your responsibility to provide a driver’s abstract annually to Campus Safety. Typically this driver’s abstract is available through your state DMV system. In some states, you can download your driver's abstract. There may be a fee, which is your responsibility and will not be reimbursed. (Sorry but international driver's licenses are not accepted.)

Am I an approved driver?

You will receive an email from Campus Safety when you have been approved to drive for Nazareth. To verify that you are an approved driver, please contact the department/program you will be driving for, or Campus Safety (21 Shults Center or 585-389-2850).

Unlicensed Off-Road Vehicle Training

Unlicensed Off-Road Vehicles such as golf carts are used for transportation of people, equipment, products, etc., on campus or for maintenance purposes. This training process will take time, and should be initiated well in advance of your need. 

Full Nazareth University policy (requires a Naz login to access).

Who must complete Unlicensed Off-Road Vehicle Training?

  • Any faculty, staff member, or student intending to drive an unlicensed-off road vehicle must fully complete this training prior to driving an unlicensed off-road vehicle.

What do I need to do to complete Unlicensed Off-Road Vehicle Training?

You must complete three parts to drive an Unlicensed Off-Road Vehicle: Driver Training, a Moodle course, and hands-on training.

  • Part 1: Complete Driver Training (see above)
    • Nazareth University Approved Driver status  must be achieved as the first step for use of unlicensed off-road vehicles.
  • Part 2: Unlicensed Off-Road Vehicle Training Moodle Course

  • Part 3: Hands-on Training
      • Unlicensed Off-Road Vehicle Training will be offered only for situations required to support the educational goals of Nazareth University. Please speak to your supervisor and/or sponsoring department about the need for training. If needed, please have your supervisor or sponsoring department email Kevin Riordan (kriorda7@naz.edu) to discuss scheduling. A small group session will be scheduled based on need. Please meet a few minutes early in the Campus Safety Office (21 Shults Center).
  • Fill out and hand in the Policy and Procedures Acknowledgement form which you will receive from the event supervisor prior to the start of the event.
First Aid

Nazareth University has partnered with an online training provider (CPR Certified/Indigo Medical Training) to provide training and certification in basic First Aid.

Required training: This training is offered for no fee to students, faculty, and staff who require it for their placements, clinical experience, and/or on-campus  positions. If you meet this criteria, please contact your academic or employment department to verify the need for the training. The department can then email a request for training to Kevin Riordan, kriorda7@naz.edu, or call, 585-389-2841. Unfortunately, Nazareth University is not providing in-person training.

Non-required training: First Aid certification is also offered directly by the Red Cross (in person), the American Heart Association (in person), and through many online providers. Costs vary and are the responsibility of the student, staff, or faculty member.

Crowd Manager Training

Certified crowd managers are required by the NYS fire code when there are large gatherings on campus (500 people in buildings or 250 in tent structures). Beyond the code requirements, anyone with oversight duties of events at Nazareth University is encouraged to complete the training. Being a certified crowd manager will allow you to develop the skills to effectively and efficiently lead and assist event crowds to safety under various emergency situations.

 There are three parts to becoming a certified crowd manager.

  • Part 1: Basic concepts - This is covered by a Moodle course that takes  about 30 minutes to complete. You need an active Nazareth account and a Moodle login/password. Be sure to print your certification at the end of the training and keep it in a safe place.

  • Part 2: Site-specific training - This live class covers how to apply the content topics to the specific locations where you will be assigned. This will be arranged by the University.
  • Part 3: Pre-event review - Prior to an event needing crowd managers, a briefing/review with the crowd managers will review the specifics of the event and the crowd manager responsibilities. This will be completed by Campus Safety.

Run-Hide-Fight: Active Shooter Training

Learn what you can do to prevent an active shooter incident and practice RUN, HIDE, and FIGHT. Active shooter incidents are unpredictable and evolve quickly, preparing for and knowing what to do in an active shooter situation can be the difference between life and death.

As a primer, here is a well done active shooter video from California State University. All of it applied here at Nazareth as well. At only 8 minutes in length, this is time well spent.

Nazareth University is offering live training classes in Active Shooter: Run, Hide, Fight during the fall 2023 semester. This training is free for current students, staff, and faculty. Please use the links below to reserve your space in the training. Classes are limited to 30 people per class.
