After teaching at Canandaigua Primary and Elementary Schools from 1997-2005, Julianna Sikes (BS Art Education, 1997 and MA General Education, 2001) moved back to her home state of California in 2005 after accepting a position as an Assistant Principal. She is also a graduate of SUNY Brockport where she received a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration in 2005. She has worked for the past 8 years in Educational Administration as an Assistant Principal, Curriculum Specialist, and most recently as an Elementary Principal in Berkeley Unified. This fall she started a new position with Mt. Diablo Unified, a school district located slightly east of the San Francisco Bay area, working as a School Support Administrator. She provides direct coaching and support to principals and also is overseeing several different curricular areas including Transitional kindergarten, PE, and visual and performing arts. Sikes writes, “I am thrilled to be back advocating for the arts and also coaching principals. I am big proponent of coaching/mentoring programs in education - as it is a way to develop and sustain teachers and administrators.” She has continued to do her own artwork - including letterpress printmaking - and is now focused on woodworking. Sikes, a world-class athlete in fencing while at Nazareth, is also looking forward to coaching fencing at a nearby club and to doing some volunteer work for the US Fencing Association.
What makes an environment conducive to artistic expression? We believe it’s a number of things: a faculty made up of highly-talented practicing artists, a curriculum rich in fine arts and liberal arts courses, a breath-taking campus and small class size. The Nazareth Art Department offers a variety of programs that take advantage of these assets.
