The program in American Studies offers an interdisciplinary study of the cultures, histories, experiences, values, and ideas that have formed and continue to form American society. Through exploring “What is America?” and “Who are Americans?” students will develop skills in critical inquiry, cultural knowledge and self-reflection that provide an in-depth understanding of the complexities of American culture. The major is also designed to foster insights into the larger presence of the United States in a growing transnational community, including the interactions with and the influences of other countries’ intellectual interests on American life and society.
